Those of you in Peer Work?

How did you get into it, how are you finding it and what advice would you have for someone wanting to do it? 😁😎

Thanks

Re: Those of you in Peer Work?

Hey @Cactus1 I feel like my entry into peer work was a bit of a windy path. I actually studied counselling and was looking for work in that area. After working at another online and phone mental health service in a more strictly counselling role I was a bit burnt out and wanting to explore what other options there were in the mental health field, which is when this job came up. I luckily found lots of my skills from my previous job to be transferrable and I've really, really enjoyed the work. As far as jobs go it's a pretty great one.

My advice for anyone who's interested in peer work might be to really get involved on the forums if you're wanting to dip your toe in a bit - everyone on here is providing peer support which I think is great experience. Other than that, something that really helps me in this role is keeping up with my own supports - seeing a counsellor regularly even when I feel like its all smooth sailing, and doing my best to keep healthy routines that support my overall wellbeing, it really helps me to keep showing up for others when I'm showing up for myself.

Thanks for the advice, appreciate it. I have some gaps in my CV from times of low mental health - Did you find the employer were accepting this when you started? Cheers

Re: Those of you in Peer Work?

hello @Cactus1

i grew up as a young carer myself so in a way i guess ive always done some sort of support work. As ive grown abit older i have found that i wanted to do more work in peer mentoring and helping others through my own experiences.
i do peer work offline through paid work now but ive also been a volunteer Community Guide with the sane forums for a few years through which ive learn many skills.
perhaps you could look into disability low care to start off, or some volunteering in a nursing home.
